Wyandanch High School students work to prevent vaping among peers

Written by

‘Escape the vape’ – that is the goal of a student-led program in local school districts.

Students are stepping up and smoking out an issue that is plaguing schools. The ‘Butterfly Mentoring Group’ are trained to become peer-to-peer leaders and provide support for vaping prevention.

Wyandanch High School is working with their student leaders to stomp e-cigarette use out of their buildings.

There are newly installed vape detectors in the girls’ and boys’ bathrooms and the students are the ones that sparked the idea of this technology installation.

“When you get to the root cause of a problem you provide support and mentoring, to ensure this thing really stops,” said Wyandanch Principal Paul Sibblies.

This is the second school district in Suffolk to implement the vape detection system. The other is in Lindenhurst.
