JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) – The Jones County Board of Supervisors voted on Monday to remove the kratom ordinance.
“There is no longer an effect of a county ordinance regarding kratom in Jones County any longer,” said Danielle Ashley, chief administrative officer/board attorney.
Back in April, the board voted to ban the substance.
At the time, the state had not passed any laws on kratom.
Now, House Bill 1077 has been passed and has been approved by Governor Tate Reeves.
It prohibits the sale or possession of kratom products for people under 21 and also bans the synthetics of kratom.
The board decided to fall under the state’s regulation.
“After the board considered what the state had passed, they felt like what the state had passed was sufficient and they were satisfied with the law,” said Ashley.
The state’s law on kratom goes into effect on July 1.
There will be fines for the sale and possession of the substance once the law goes into effect.
