Juul agrees to nearly $440 million settlement after youth vaping probe

Youth vaping is one of the most pressing public health concerns of our time. With sleek designs and enticing flavors, vape products have captured the attention of young people, leading to a rise in nicotine addiction among youth.
According to the 2024 Florida Youth Tobacco Survey, 21% of high school students in Florida have tried vaping, and 10% have used a vape in the last 30 days.
These numbers are alarming.
But here in Sarasota County, we are fortunate to have a school district that is taking a strong stand against this growing epidemic.
A proactive approach
The Sarasota County Schools district has long maintained a firm policy against vaping on school campuses. Now it is going above and beyond by launching a Youth Vaping Task Force.
This initiative brings together all interested parties – including students, educators, parents and community leaders – to tackle this issue head-on.
The involvement of Students Working Against Tobacco clubs throughout the county is particularly commendable, as youth-led advocacy is one of the most effective ways to drive change.
By taking this proactive approach, the Sarasota County Schools district is setting an example for other school districts to follow.
Rather than simply enforcing disciplinary actions, it is fostering education, awareness and student engagement to address the root causes of youth vaping.
The creation of this task force demonstrates a commitment to protecting students’ health and ensuring they have the tools and knowledge to make informed decisions.
Parents, vendors have roles to play
We at the Tobacco Free Partnership of Sarasota County applaud Sarasota County Schools for their leadership on this issue. Combating youth vaping requires a united effort, and it is heartening to see our schools take such decisive action.
But we cannot rely solely on the schools.
We ask parents to make sure their kids know that vapes, despite their appealing fruit and mint flavors, contain nicotine – which is a highly addictive drug.
And we ask vendors to make sure the vapes they sell are compliant with Florida’s nicotine product registry to reduce or eliminate point-of-sale advertising – and to ensure that anyone buying a tobacco product is at least 21 years old.
With the continued support of community partners, parents and students themselves, we can curb the vaping epidemic and create a healthier future for Sarasota County youths.
