A Michigan House committee has taken up a proposed tax on vape products.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has proposed a 32% tax on the wholesale price of e-cigarettes and other non-tobacco nicotine products. Kezia Ofusu-Atta is with the American Lung Association of Michigan and testified before a House subcommittee.

Vaping is actually very dangerous because it contains a lot of these addictive chemicals and it can deliver these nicotine and these chemicals at a higher level and in a more rapid rate,” Atta said. “So it’s easily addictive and it’s easily hooking the next generation and also the current generation of adults to make them more dependent on these products.”

Atta says vaping is attractive to teens. The lung association supports the tax on vapes, while businesses who sell vapes don’t .
