MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – The temporary pause on the opening of certain new businesses in Montgomery has been put on hold.
The Montgomery City Council on June 3 decided to enforce a moratorium on business permits for new package stores, convenience stores, gas stations, and vape shops.
According to Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed’s office, he vetoed the ordinance.
After the vote nearly two weeks ago, WSFA received the following statement from the mayor’s office:
In a copy of the ordinance obtained by WSFA, other reasons given for the veto are “the economic impact of a moratorium needs to be studied further” and “the moratorium adversely effects new businesses trying to obtain a business license.”
Similar moratoriums have been passed in Pike Road, Prattville, and Millbrook.
The Montgomery City Council meets again Tuesday at 5 p.m.
