Police say a disagreement occurred between two male juveniles that led to a firearm being flashed. A struggle then occurred, causing the gun to discharge.
FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A juvenile in Fort Wayne is recovering after a shooting over a vape pen cartridge Wednesday afternoon.
According to a release from the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, around 4:16 p.m. on May 28, deputies responded to the 1000 block of Townsend Run, which is in a neighborhood near Bass Road and West Hamilton Road North on the far west side of Fort Wayne, on a report of a disturbance involving juveniles.
When deputies arrived on scene, they found a male juvenile suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. He was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. Police later recovered a firearm at the scene.
The preliminary investigation showed that two male juveniles were attempting to sell vape pen cartridges to two other male juveniles when a disagreement occurred.
Police say the disagreement led to an altercation in which a gun was flashed and a physical struggle between two of the juveniles began. During the struggle, the gun discharged and struck one of the juveniles in the leg.
The two juveniles who attempted to purchase the vape cartridges fled the scene following the incident, according to police.
Later, police discovered the firearm used in the shooting had been previously reported as stolen. A follow-up investigation led police to recover of two additional firearms, one of which was also reported as stolen.
The Allen County Sheriff’s Department says the incident remains under investigation and has not yet announced any arrests.
